This is a wonderful volume of short stories written just after the turn of the 19th century. For a '19th century' author (Maarten Maartens was born in 1858), he had modern instincts way ahead of his contemporaries. The stories are easy to read, funny and sometimes tragic, showing the plight (and cunning) of women in his days.
This volume became a source for me - as his grand nephew - to write my own 'Some Women I Have Known', a memoir/coming-of-age story, as my first contribution to literary fiction (published on Amazon in 2015). www.johnschwartzauthor.com
